John Claughton, Head Teacher at King Edward's School, Edgbaston, UK has been named the best chief of a public school at the UK’s 2016 Tatler Schools Awards.

Claughton remarked to the Birmingham Post: "I am thrilled to have received this award. […] King Edward's is a great school and it has been for a long, long time.”

In 2010, the school made the decision to drop A Levels in favour of teaching the Diploma Programme.

Claughton said, “These days [the school] is providing a remarkable education for a bunch of boys of great social and ethnic diversity and, in so doing, is preparing them for the complex world that lies beyond. That's what really matters."

There have been major developments in all aspects of the school, including a fund-raising effort to pay for fees for pupils from deprived backgrounds. Through the support of the school's alumni network, a performing arts centre, a science and modern languages centre and a hockey pavilion and astro pitch have been built. The school is also being recognised for its outreach programme that sees it engage with almost 11,000 children within the local community each year.

Another success for Claughton was King Edward's School winning the best independent-maintained school in the TES Independent School Awards 2015.
