The Japan Times offers insight into global leadership at the International School of Asia, Karuizawa
The school’s founder, Lin Kobayashi, said her experiences in Mexico and the Philippines motivated her to start the school, Japan’s first all-English international boarding school.
She saw that one effect of poverty, in poorer countries, was to negate the positive effects of education. She decided that the school should offer scholarships to children growing up in such societies.
Students understand each others’ stories and experiences on a deeper level. “It gives them a strong impression, as if it were a first-hand experience,” said Kobayashi. “This happens only because this school has diversity.”
Students attain leadership through practice and experience. Kobayashi, who is an IB graduate from Pearson UWC in Canada, believes that education alone is not enough to bring people out of poor living conditions – young people can only improve society when they become leaders.
