After graduating from Long Trail School in Vermont, United States, Nellie Burch has been awarded second year status at Alfred University in New York State, based on her performance in the IB Diploma Programme (DP). Thanks to this, she will attain her undergraduate degree in three years instead of four.

"While I know college will be a lot of work, the IB [programme] has already prepared me to complete that level of study," the graduate said to The Manchester Journal.

Alfred University grants one year's credit (30 semester hours) to students who have earned an IB Diploma in high school. For Nellie Burch, this will mean $43,000 in saved tuition fees. Deb MacDonald, Dean of Academics at Long Trail School, commented:

"Long Trail is so pleased for Nellie. Not only has she gained extensive practice in the patterns of thinking and academic knowledge that IB promotes, but she has saved herself an entire year of college tuition and associated fees. Her decision to complete the IB Diploma Programme has had and will continue to have successful impacts for Nellie."

Burch aims to study international relations in college.
