“I love to read. A lot!” 16-year-old Erin Bedenbaugh tells coladaily.com. To honour her love of reading, and as part of her creativity, activity, service (CAS) project during her IB Diploma Programme studies at Lexington High School, Erin created three Little Libraries in Lexington County. The concept is simple, she puts books in boxes and people can take them to read or leave some for others.
Erin started the project using books that had belonged to her late grandmother. “There’s no point in not letting other people have that chance to read some great books,” she explains. The project has kept her busy, but she said, “I’ve found it’s been very useful to connect with the community. It’s been great and I love it.”
Erin has seen lots of engagement, support and encouragement from the community, through social media or by talking to people. “We love that it’s here,” says Jaishree Webster, for example, as she helps her son choose a book from one of the library boxes. Erin also received support from Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall: “She is a great steward to the community, providing an engaging outlet for readers to have access to books and promoting a healthy quality of life by encouraging readers to stay outside and take in fresh air.”
