The Hague / Bethesda, April 8, 2014 — Andrew Macdonald joins the International Baccalaureate (IB), a leader in international education, in the role of Chief Schools Officer (CSO).
He will lead a team of 200 employees across three global centres— in the US, The Netherlands, and Singapore—who are dedicated to serving nearly 4,000 IB World Schools worldwide attended by over one million IB students. As CSO, Macdonald oversees professional development of IB educators, authorization and support services to IB World schools and developing opportunities so that more students are able to benefit from an IB education.
Andrew Macdonald has a combination of commercial and mission-driven educational experience spanning the last two decades. He helped lead mission-driven organizations in America, Europe and Australia, covering literacy improvement, computer-based assessment and online learning. Working for such organizations as Kaplan Virtual Education and Renaissance Learning, he gained significant cross-functional experience in marketing, business development, logistics, HR, IT, academic services, finance, and customer service. In his most recent role as Senior Vice President (Operations) at Wilson Language Training, based in Oxford, MA, he was noted as a transformational leader, moving the organization to a full-scale automated enterprise system.
Macdonald says, “It is an honour to join the IB, a recognized leader in global education for over four decades. I look forward to serving the organization and most importantly the students, educators, and parents who are part of the growing IB community.”
Under Andrew Macdonald’s leadership, one of his key priorities will be to bring a single-minded focus on schools, to ensure that schools know the IB is listening and will nimbly respond to their needs, creating more support for schools, and adapting in response to feedback from schools.
IB Director General Dr Siva Kumari commented, “Andrew’s focus on results and operational excellence is coupled with systems thinking and—most importantly—a passion for education. These qualities will serve the Schools Division and the IB well.”
Macdonald holds a BA from Drew University, Madison, NJ, and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is currently completing his Doctor of Education at Northeastern University in Boston, MA.
Andrew Macdonald will relocate from Boston, Massachusetts to Bethesda, Maryland to take up his appointment and will report to the IB Director-General, who is based in The Hague, The Netherlands.
